Max Hodder: Ramires v Barcelona, 2012

2-0 down. Captain sent off. Away from home against one of the best teams in the world. It seemed that Chelsea’s formidable Champions League journey had come to an end.

Once again Chelsea were on the back foot, the underdogs as usual. The Blues barely controlled possession in the first half against Barcelona. Brazilian-born box-to-box workhorse Ramires, although he was not known for his goalscoring, produced one of the greatest pieces of magic ever witnessed in a Chelsea shirt.

Frank Lampard’s ball was, on its own something, to behold, a pinpoint pass perfectly weighted into the path of a full-pelt Ramires. He is through on goal.

“Surely not?” I thought. No way on earth do we deserve this. Victor Valdes comes out, arms spread wide. Ramires collects the ball on the edge of the box. With a first time effort, he dinks the ball so cooly over the Spaniard’s outstretched arms.

Pure class. The moment, the assist and the finish. The goal that essentially sent Chelsea to Munich. Oh, and the celebration capped off the goal perfectly. Exquisite.
