Siva Sankar: Branislav Ivanovic v Napoli, 2012

Branislav Ivanovic has been, and remains, a Chelsea hero. He has etched his name into the Chelsea folklore by scoring some very important goals in his career. The rightback’s buccaneering spirit and a striker’s instinct in the box have led to many spectacular and important goals.

His goals against Liverpool will always remain in memory and so will his final minute goal against Benfica in the Europa League final. That knack of turning up in the right place at the right time is best exemplified by his goal at home to Napoli.

His goal started Chelsea on the road to the incredible run that ended with the Champions League trophy. Ivanovic had come close to scoring a few times in that match from set pieces. His header drew the penalty that Frank Lampard duly dispatched, sending the teams into extra time.

As the first period of extra time drew to an end, Drogba turned smartly and whipped a low ball across the box. Inexplicably, the Serb got on the end of it and emphatically lashed it in.
