Alexis Sanchez to Chelsea? The rumor mill is back! However, this story is not as outrageous as it initially seems. Let’s discuss the possibilities.

Occasionally, a transfer rumor appears that is crazy, but has just enough detail to be believable. Even if the source is usually suspect, the rumor should at least be briefly considered. Enter the Mirror, who are reporting that Alexis Sanchez wants a massive pay boost before he signs a new contract with Arsenal.

Wait, what does this have to do with Chelsea? Well, per the Mirror, Chelsea are planning what would be the coup of English football. Chelsea may attempt to put the Chilean in beautiful blue if Arsenal cannot resolve the contract standoff.

This rumor has some steam when broken down. Arsenal have generally been a club that have kept their wages from spiraling out of control. It has been a long time since they have had a player of Alexis Sanchez’s quality, but they do not want to break from tradition as every other title challenging club has done.

More from The Pride of London

They find themselves in a similar situation with Mesut Ozil, whose contract runs out at the same time in 2018 as Sanchez’s. Arsenal, being ever economical, will want to recoup some of their initial spending instead of letting them leave for free or paying them some of the league’s highest wages.

For Sanchez, this is about the money as well the prestige. Since his move to Arsenal, he has become not only one of the best players in the Premier League, but also one of the best in the world. Seeing players such as Paul Pogba, Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard entering the league and making substantially more money is certainly hard to take. Sanchez, along with Ozil, believe they are worth more.

As for prestige, Sanchez moved from Barcelona to Arsenal. He came to win trophies with the London club, something that clearly is not happening. A club like Chelsea, even after finishing 10th last season, are far better poised to make a title challenge than Arsenal. A move across town would give Sanchez the paycheck he deserves as well as the trophies he so desires.

And Chelsea would benefit more than anyone in this deal. Sanchez, with only one year on his contract, would not likely cost more than Chelsea’s recent transfers. His wages would be a hard hit, but with Cesc Fabregas more likely to leave than stay, the net cost would come back to zero. The player himself would not have to readjust to a new life and he is well accustomed to the rigors of the Premier League.

But most of all, this would be the kind of signing that makes Chelsea clear favorites for the title. Sanchez can do everything that Pedro can, but better, and would take his starting spot immediately. A front three of Hazard, Diego Costa and Sanchez would give Chelsea one of the deadliest attacks in the world.

Such a move would substantially weaken a rival, while at the same time making the Premier League, at most, a three-horse race with the similarly free-spending clubs of Manchester. The trio are currently the top three candidates for player of the year and putting them all on one team would be like playing FIFA on amateur difficulty.

As exciting as this rumor is, it is still just a rumor. Similar rumors come up every day, and are simply putting cases of putting two and two together. Sanchez wants more money? Chelsea pay their players high wages? Boom, Sanchez to Chelsea.

Chelsea would be foolish to not be considering the possibility of making such a move. The only team in the world that Sanchez would not be able to improve at the moment would be Barcelona.

Today this is just a rumor. But if this continues to be a story, and Chelsea’s name continues to be linked, this might happen. In a world where Leicester City won the Premier League, anything is possible. Including Alexis Sanchez to Chelsea.
