Goalkeeper dilemma for Chelsea as Craig Gordon is targeted
Chelsea are reportedly targeting Celtic goalkeeper, Craig Gordon, as they consider loaning Asmir Begovic to AFC Bournemouth.
Chelsea are facing a dilemma in the goalkeeping department. Asmir Begovic is reportedly eager to get regular football, but Antonio Conte is reluctant to let the Bosnian leave as the Blues push for the Premier League title. Craig Gordon may provide the solution, with club officials considering a move for the Celtic man.
According to The Telegraph, Gordon is one of three goalkeepers Chelsea have shortlisted as they try to resolve their situation.
"Craig Gordon is the surprise name on a three-man shortlist drawn up by Chelsea as they consider whether or not to allow Asmir Begovic to join Bournemouth this month…Begovic will only be sold this month if an attractive replacement who Chelsea can sign is identified."
Begovic joined the Blues last summer and made 17 league appearances in his first season. Injuries and suspensions allowed him a significant chunk of playing time. This term, though, he has been limited to four games, all in cup competition.

As a result, the talented Bosnian is keen to leave Stamford Bridge. At the age of 29, he is being wasted on the bench. Bournemouth have apparently already had a £10 million bid rejected, but the acquisition of Gordon would clear the way for his exit.
Gordon has resurrected his career at Celtic, making over 130 appearances in the last two and a half seasons. He has been a reliant rock for the Bhoys, helping them to two league titles and two League Cups.
However, with his career reaching its denouement, Chelsea may be able to swoop for the Scotsman. A bid worth some £5 million would tempt Brendan Rodgers. Furthermore, Gordon will likely be more comfortable with a backup role than Begovic given his age of 34.
Time is running out in this January transfer window, so much will need to happen for any business to go through. Such a deal would probably be best for all parties. Begovic is far too talented to play second-fiddle, while Gordon (and Celtic) could earn a tidy pay-package.
Chelsea would profit from the deals and be no worse off on the field either. With the Premier League title within reach, the Blues must account for all possibilities and that includes an injury to Courtois. Hence, having a player content with playing his backup is better than someone whose mind is (justifiably) elsewhere.
