Chelsea have launched a second bid for Craig Gordon, according to the latest reports, indicating their eagerness to sign the Celtic goalkeeper.

Time is ticking away as the January transfer window reaches its end. Chelsea are still looking to do business, with the Blues making a fresh offer for Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon. The latest reports suggest that Antonio Conte is keen on allowing Asmir Begovic to move on by bringing in Gordon as his replacement.

Sky Sports, and their Sky Sources, report that the second bid is worth around £4 million. Chelsea had an initial offer rejected on Friday.

"Chelsea have launched a second bid of £4m for Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon, according to Sky sources. The Blues are on the hunt for a replacement for Asmir Begovic…and had an initial offer for Gordon rejected on Friday."

Begovic has been the subject of bids from Bournemouth, who are looking to sign the Bosnian for around £10 million. He has not played much for the Blues this season, with Thibaut Courtois returning to form and staying clear of injury.

At the age of 28, Begovic is far too talented to waste away on the sidelines and the club have recognised this. However, they cannot let him go unless they find someone to take his place.

With the Premier League reaching its business end, Chelsea cannot afford to take risks. Should Courtois succumb to injury, the Blues need a back-up who can provide a similarly solid service between the nets.

Gordon is a proven goalkeeper and he appears to have improved with age. His stint with Celtic has arguably been the finest of his career. Furthermore, the 34-year-old will be more comfortable with playing second-fiddle, especially if his pay-package is lucrative enough.

Time is running out, though. A couple of days remain in this transfer window and much needs to be sorted for these deals to work out. The last thing Chelsea want is to wind up with both Gordon and Begovic at Stamford Bridge, or neither.
