Victor Moses started pre-season hoping he would not go out on another loan. Today he signed a new contract that will keep him firmly at Chelsea through 2021.

Few people would have predicted that Victor Moses would be one of Chelsea’s key contract re-negotiations this season. But after his spectacular transition to wing-back and amid transfer interest from FC Barcelona, Chelsea signed Moses to new terms and a contract extension.

The new contract extends Moses’ time at Chelsea from 2019 to 2021. The club did not disclose his new wages, but they are surely sufficient to fend off Barcelona and other clubs at that level.

Moses has gone from the fringes to the starting XI to a long-term deal. Now he has only one thing left to do this season.

"I’m delighted to be here for another few years now and to sign a new deal. Now it’s time to concentrate on the team and keep working hard to make sure we win games and try to win the Premier League this season. – Chelsea FC"

Moses has already played more minutes this season than he has since 2011/12 at Wigan. He had six goals and an assist as a winger that season before completing his move to Chelsea in late August 2012. He played for Chelsea in all competitions that season, scoring four goals in the Europa League en route to that trophy.

Victor Moses started for the first time under Antonio Conte in the EFL Cup against Leicester City. He made his Premier League starting XI debut 10 days later as part of Conte’s first 3-4-3 at Chelsea. Since then, Moses has started every Premier League game and one FA Cup tie.

Victor Moses’ entire journey this season is a compelling story for the young players and loanees. Moses shows that the loan system can (but by no means always) have a positive outcome. However, Moses’ story should not overshadow the continuing need to reform the loan system. Successes like his should be the rule, not the exception.
