Bertrand Traore furthers case for Chelsea role by netting brace
Bertrand Traore hit the back of the net twice over the weekend, just to remind Chelsea fans that he is still alive and kicking.
With rumours swirling around Diego Costa, Chelsea seem set to be on the chase for a star striker over the summer. However, one of their own is catching the eye out on loan. Bertrand Traore scored twice for Ajax at the weekend as they steamrolled Nijmegen 5-1.
The Blues prospect bagged a pair of wonderfully taken goals in a timely reminder of his quality. Traore scored Ajax’s third goal (at the 2:12 mark) with a precise left-foot finish. He turned the defender with a classy instep move before guiding the ball into the bottom left corner.
His second, and Ajax’s fourth, was another well-taken left-footed effort (4:30). Traore was able to control a bouncing ball and evade a couple of defenders to find the back of the net.
With Chelsea’s current striker situation, Traore is throwing himself into contention. The Blues have largely played this season without a backup striker, due to Antonio Conte’s bias against Michy Batshuayi. Traore could easily fill that support role next season.
If Diego Costa stays, he may even get a fair crack at a first-team starting role. Costa has enjoyed a free run in the side in the knowledge that Conte is unwilling to trust Batshuayi. Traore could pressure Costa and even take his place should he show the boss that he is up to the task.
Traore has scored 11 goals in 32 competitive appearances this season, which is admittedly not a fantastic record. However, if the 21-year-old can hit a purple patch as the campaign draws to a close, Stamford Bridge officials will have to take notice.
Having said that, the possibility of staying in West London next season also throws up a dilemma. At the age of 21, Traore needs regular high-level football to develop and fulfill his significant potential. Chelsea will probably bring in another star striker over the summer, meaning that Traore will spend most of his time on the sidelines.
Hence, the player may request to be shipped out on loan again, whether it be to Ajax or perhaps a club of higher quality. This is the issue all Chelsea youngsters face and, despite a new regime, their lack of opportunities doesn’t seem to be changing.
