Chelsea are working on a deal to bring Romelu Lukaku back to Stamford Bridge, with the latest reports claiming that they have made contact.

With the Premier League title in the bag, Chelsea are already turning one eye to a packed 2017/18 campaign. The club are due to be busy in the summer transfer market and are particularly keen on bringing in a striker. Romelu Lukaku is one of the targets and the Blues have reportedly made contact.

According to The Sun, citing sources in Italy, Chelsea have already held talks with Lukaku’s representatives.

"Gianluca di Marzio claims Lukaku is Chelsea’s top choice and talks with his representatives are already under way.The player himself has allegedly spoken to Blues goalkeeper and Belgium teammate Thibaut Courtois over his potential move back to London. And Chelsea are now ready to enter into discussions with Everton as they prepare to make a £70m offer."

More from The Pride of London

Lukaku has already stated his intent to leave Everton, refusing to sign a contract extension. Hence, the Blues have their tails up as they look to take advantage of the notion that he has unfinished business in West London.

The Belgian has come on leaps and bounds since joining Everton. This season, Lukaku has scored the most goals in the Premier League, cementing his reputation as one of the most exciting forwards in the game.

At the age of 24, there are still many years left in the tank and, more importantly, room for improvement. Lukaku was identified as a star while in the Chelsea system and he is now fulfilling his potential.

However, he will not be cheap. The figure currently being touted is £70 million. With the likes of Real Madrid supposedly interested, the Toffees will likely hold out for a hefty fee.

With Diego Costa all but on his way out of the club, Chelsea are in need of a world-class striker. Playing in the Champions League next season, the Blues will need to be in possession of a difference maker up front. A striker who can feed off whatever scraps that come his way is vital to a successful European side.
