Contract negotiations between Chelsea and Thibaut Courtois have stalled with the Belgian demanding wages on the level of David De Gea.

Talks between Chelsea and Thibaut Courtois have broken down as the parties attempt to agree better terms for the goalkeeper. An impressive season between the sticks for the Blues have forced the club’s hand, with the Belgian’s contract due to run out in two years’ time.

According to The Times, Courtois wants around £200,000 per week to bring him closer to the deal that David De Gea is on.

"The negotiations over Thibaut Courtois’ new contract at Chelsea have stalled over the goalkeeper’s wage demands and, without further talks scheduled, he could start the season without a deal being reached.Courtois has two years left on his contract, worth about £100,000 a week, and hopes for near parity with David De Gea, his counterpart at Manchester United who is paid twice that. The Belgium goalkeeper believes that the increase is justified after he recorded the highest number of clean sheets in the league last season as Chelsea won the title."

Courtois was in fine form for Chelsea. Confidence in the goalkeeper undoubtedly enabled the more creative players to be more expressive further up the field. With Real Madrid reportedly circling, the Blues are understandably keen to tie the Belgian down.

However, both his performances and the Madrid interest give Courtois the upper hand. With De Gea on an eye-watering package up in Manchester, the Belgian is trying to draw as much money out of Chelsea as he possibly can.

Moreover, he does not appear overly loyal to the West London club. If Real Madrid want him, he will happily leave unless the Blues can meet his demands.
