Chelsea should not waste money on a defender this summer

If Chelsea spend any money on a central defender ahead of next season, it would be a ludicrously wasteful decision from the Blues board.

One of the most talked about clubs of the offseason has been Chelsea. However, if the Blues are going to add a central defender, which they should do, it should be Andreas Christensen. It is time for Christensen to graduate from the loan system and show just how good a player he is for Chelsea in the Premier League.

Christensen is perhaps the top or a top 3 defensive prospect in Europe. He is wonderful with his feet and tall and strong. When compared with other defensive leaders from across the continent Christensen compares very well.

The Blues should not spend money for the sake of spending. There is no need to buy a central defender when they already have a young solid one with Champions League experience and two years in the first 11 in the Bundesliga.

People who want the club to buy a center back are not thinking clearly. Spending £70 million on a CB who is not noticeably much better than the 20-year-old would be ridiculous.

The Blues must resist splashing the cash solely to make headlines. You waste money and upset the squad balance. It would also be a wonderful thing for morale if finally, after all this time, a loan player made it at Chelsea as a starter.

Christensen is good enough to start 35 matches next season and should be given the opportunity. Chelsea can start him and supplement the back three with Nathan Ake – who would be taking the field every week at most other Premier League clubs.

That then saves money for the purchase of a striker, a wing-back, a back-up goalkeeper and an attacking midfielder. There is absolutely no reason to go out and spend money on a center back. It would be a foolish, silly waste of time and resources.
