Chelsea are reportedly targeting Melayro Bogarde, the nephew of former Blue, Winston Bogarde. Manchester City and Liverpool are also in the race.

Winston Bogarde’s stint in West London was probably one of the most bizarre in Chelsea history. However, the club don’t seem put off by that as they reportedly target his nephew. Melayro Bogarde currently plays for Feyenoord and the Blues are one of the numerous English clubs considering a move for him.

For those unfamiliar with the story of Winston Bogarde, the Dutchman fell victim to a change in manager. Claudio Ranieri came in shortly after he was purchased and handed a lucrative contract. Despite not featuring in the manager’s plans, Bogarde opted to see his out his contract by turning up to training each day. The money, he said, was just too good to sacrifice.

Hopefully, Melayro Bogarde won’t follow a similar path to his uncle. Having said that, the supposed competition for his signature suggests that a lucrative deal may be necessary.

With both Manchester clubs and Liverpool keen on signing him up, the Blues will do well to convince him that West London is best for his development. This is especially true given the way his uncle was treated.

At his age, Chelsea have proven that they are objectively the best club to hone your skills. Breaking into the first team is a different matter, but the success of the youth teams show the Blues have the best talent at those levels.

Bogarde is a versatile defender who can distribute the ball, according to The Guardian. The youngster is apparently in the mould of John Stone, with a fearless attitude and an affinity to play the ball out of defence.

Evidently, he has shown much promise for all these Premier League clubs to be interested. Hopefully the Blues can fight off their rivals and bring another precocious talent to Stamford Bridge. And hopefully he’ll end up making more first team appearances than his uncle.
