Chelsea’s Community Shield result historically counts for very little

Don’t panic! Chelsea losing the Community Shield isn’t the end of the world as the Blues have historically won multiple trophies after falling at the first hurdle.

Chelsea put in a hapless performance on Sunday as they lost the Community Shield to Arsenal. The display, along with the result and the bizarre penalty shoot-out has since sent the Blues social media world into panic mode. However, let’s try to quell some concerns with a history lesson.

Believe it or not, the Blues have been historically terrible in the Community Shield. They have competed 12 times in the season curtain-raiser. They have won just four times. They have also lost their last four games and six out of their last seven. Starting off with a defeat has not necessarily hindered the club’s competitive campaign, though.

In 1997, Chelsea lost to Manchester United on penalties. However, the club would go on to win both the League Cup and, more significantly, the European Cup Winners’ Cup. After being beaten 2-1 by Liverpool in the 2006 edition, Jose Mourinho led the Blues to the FA Cup and League Cup while finishing second in the league. A 3-2 loss against Manchester City saw Chelsea reach the semi-finals of both domestic cups while they won the Europa League.

Meanwhile, a Community Shield victory in 2000 led to turmoil. Gianluca Vialli was sacked in September. The Blues exited the UEFA Cup in the first round, the League Cup in the third round and the FA Cup in the fifth round. They also finished 6th.

However, victories in the 2005 edition was followed by a league title while the 2009 win paved the way for a league and FA Cup double.

In short, the Blues’ results in the Community Shield have little correlation with success. They have won trophies after disappointing in the season opener and they have won trophies after starting with a win.

The issue this season, though, is that the squad doesn’t look ready. Previous losses have come as a result of the pre-season attitude to the fixture. This defeat laid bare the problems with Antonio Conte’s current team. It lacks depth and preparation.

The result is not what is concerning Blues fans this time. Chelsea lost, but the nature of the loss is causing supporters to hit that big red panic button. After selling a handful of players and failing to bring in enough replacements, Chelsea are setting themselves up for a fall.
