The latest reports suggest that Chelsea may take legal action against Diego Costa should he not return to training. What good would that do?

As the Diego Costa saga drags on, the latest reports claim that Chelsea may sue the striker should he remain in Brazil. At this point in time, such action would do absolutely nothing to help this ordeal come to an end.

According to The Telegraph, the Blues are considering legal action as Costa continues to chill with family and friends in Brazil. With the striker almost certain to never play for the club again, suing him does little to benefit any party.

"Diego Costa could face the threat of being sued by Chelsea if he ignores the club’s requests to return to training…Costa and his representatives could face the threat of being sued for effectively wiping millions of pounds off his valuation."

Antonio Conte has told Costa that he doesn’t want him. However, Chelsea’s inability to offload him leaves the club and the striker in a sticky situation. From Costa’s perspective, he doesn’t want to train with the reserves and is thus staying in Brazil until a deal is struck.

Meanwhile, the club are seeing his value plummet. The developments make the Blues evidently desperate to get rid of Costa and hence interested parties have greater bargaining power.

Chelsea, though, should just cut their losses and move him on as soon as possible. Taking legal action will just lead to an arduous process in which accusations and insults will be thrown back and forth.

Given the Blues’ current struggles, the last thing they need is a legal row. Conte should be focussed on getting his squad up to speed and back on track. The board, meanwhile, should be spending their time and effort in recruiting some deadline day signings.

Costa has already stated that he has been fined by the club. He simply won’t care if Chelsea try to draw more money out of him. He just wants to leave.

This cannot happen without a suitable counterparty, but lowering the asking price will help things along. A battle between lawyers won’t do anyone any good. Chelsea should swallow their pride and bring this sorry saga to a close.
