Chelsea are still reportedly trailing Antonio Candreva and Inter Milan boss, Luciano Spalletti, has admitted that the Blues could well sign the winger.

Chelsea continue to scramble around for last-minute signings as the transfer window deadline dawns. They have been linked with a move for Antonio Candreva for some time now and Inter boss, Luciano Spalletti, has seemingly prepared himself for a bid from the Blues.

"My position is to keep him and the club agrees with me, for now he has not shown any other signals. We go forward calmly, then I don’t know what could happen tomorrow. As far as I can tell, Chelsea could try to do something. – via Daily Star"

Although primarily a winger, Candreva has been tipped to challenge for a wingback slot in West London. He has shown the tools going forward, but his defensive skills will need working on.

However, Chelsea are in a desperate position at the moment. Currently, Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso are the club’s two genuine wingbacks. Cesar Azpilicueta has been asked to deputise while Moses has been suspended, but he isn’t a long-term option in the role.

As time winds down, Chelsea need to sign whoever they can. Spallotti’s comments indicate that a deal for Candreva could feasibly happen before the end of the month.

The Blues are reportedly readying a bid in the region of £25 million as they try to pry the Italian away from the nation’s capital. In the current market environment, that seems like a decent price for a talented player.

Candreva is already 30-years-old, though, and hence the club’s contract policy may work against them. The Blues only hand one-year contracts to players over that age. Candreva may not want to accept a move that brings little job security.

This may be an occasion on which Chelsea officials should waive their contract restrictions for the greater good of the team. The Blues need the squad depth. Moreover, there will be few other deals that can be done on such short notice.
