After just two games with his new club, Nathaniel Chalobah is reportedly in England contention, further justifying his Chelsea departure.

Chelsea are not enjoying the best of starts to the season. A poor pre-season was compounded by a Community Shield loss to Arsenal and an opening day defeat at home to Burnley. There has been much talk about their summer transfer activity, with the decision to sell Nathaniel Chalobah to Watford of particular concern. The midfielder, though, has impressed in his two starts with the Hornets and is now in England contention.

(As if Chalobah needed to give the Blues’ other youngsters another reason to abandon Chelsea’s development programme.)

"Nathaniel Chalobah is in contention for his first senior England call-up as Gareth Southgate seeks to flesh out his currently thin options in central midfield. Chalobah essentially gave up on his Chelsea dream this summer. Having considered the situation, he evidently felt that his career was served best by leaving the Blues. Some fans have tried to blame him for a lack of ambition, but that just isn’t the case. He wanted and needed regular first-team football and leaving West London was the only way to get it.

He has started both of Watford’s opening two Premier League games and has proven his talent and potential. Chalobah appears to have saved his career by making this move.

With this England news, there seems to be fewer and fewer downsides to leaving the champions. The 2018 World Cup takes place next summer and Chalobah is now in with a shot of muscling his way onto that Russia-bound plane. Had he stayed at Stamford Bridge, he would be nowhere near.

What is most concerning is that Chalobah’s form shows his contemporaries that the grass can very much be greener on the other side. No matter how talented you may be, Chelsea do not appear to be too interested in breaking you into the first team. So, instead of wasting your time, leave the Blues and get the opportunity to prove yourself.

Moreover, at this rate, a big club will come calling for Chalobah in a couple of years. It may be Chelsea, or it may be a European rival. The bottom line is that the Englishman is now able to catch the eye in England’s top flight.

What do you think of this? Are you happy for Chalobah? Or are you still a bit bitter?
