Chelsea lining up moves for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and two others
Chelsea are looking to sign a trio of English players before the transfer window closes. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Danny Drinkwater and Ross Barkley are being lined up.
As we enter the last week of the transfer window, Chelsea are still looking to get some significant business over the line. A spirited victory against Tottenham did not quell fears over the club’s squad depth and the Blues are lining up offers for three English players.
According to The Telegraph, Chelsea are weighing up bids totalling around £100 million for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Danny Drinkwater and Ross Barkley.
"Other than bidding £35 million for Oxlade-Chamberlain, Chelsea are still working towards finding an agreement for Danny Drinkwater, who Leicester City value at £40 million, and are refusing to give up on £25 million Ross Barkley."
All three players have been linked with the club over the summer. Oxlade-Chamberlain has been in a contract stand-off with Arsenal and his deployment in a wingback role towards the end of last season makes him of interest. The Blues need some wingback competition and Oxlade-Chamberlain is the most likely arrival this late in the transfer window.

Danny Drinkwater, meanwhile, has also been on Chelsea’s radar. The initial reports of the club’s interest were met with ridicule, but Chelsea are genuinely pursuing the Leicester City midfielder. Drinkwater was fantastic for the Foxes when they won the Premier League and he will likely be used as backup to N’Golo Kante, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Cesc Fabregas.
Craig Shakespeare has left Drinkwater out of his matchday squads this season, only increasing the probability of a deal. Leicester have set a high asking price for their midfielder so it will be up to Chelsea to work some negotiating magic.
Further up the field, Ross Barkley is the player that the Blues need least. Their attacking options, relative to their midfield and defensive ones, are well catered for. However, Barkley is wanting to leave Everton and Chelsea could grab the Englishman for a reasonable fee.
Tottenham have been trailing Barkley for a few weeks now, but no deal has been struck yet. Barkley has failed to develop as expected over the last few seasons and many even find his £25 million price tag too dear.
Chelsea, though, once again have little option. Barkley is the highest-profile forward they can sign this late into the summer. If they feel a need to provide backup in the attacking third, then they will have to cough up the cash.
