Eden Hazard has been called up to Belgium’s senior squad for the upcoming international break. As he is not yet fully fit, Chelsea should be questioning Roberto Martinez.
Chelsea should be justifiably infuriated by Eden Hazard’s call-up to the Belgium squad. The player is not yet fit to take the field for the Blues and thus he only risks further injury during the international break.
Speaking about the winger’s call-up, Antonio Conte couldn’t hide his bemusement.
"I am a bit surprised about this decision. I was a coach in the Italy national team and I respect the decision of their coach…Hazard is an important player for us. If someone thinks to accelerate the process… I think it’s not the right way. It’s a great mistake. – Daily Mail"
Hazard is by far Chelsea’s most important player. The three games played so far (including the Community Shield) have shown how devoid of creativity the Blues are without him. The backroom staff must have been working furiously to make sure his recovery is as well-programmed as possible. This call-up just throws a spoke in the wheel.
Christensen's Future: Conte’s midfield shuffling at Chelsea ideal for Andreas Christensen
Hazard has been playing with the U23s as he works his way back to full-fitness. He has been deemed not ready for the Everton game and will continue to sit out.
The international break comes on the heels of Sunday’s fixture, meaning that Hazard’s return may come in Belgian colours. In fact, it is highly likely.
Having been under the watchful eye of Chelsea’s coaching and medical team, the last thing they want is for Hazard to be thrust into a high-intensity World Cup qualifier in his first game back. Hazard will probably be excused from the match against Gibraltar. However, the second fixture away to Greece will require him.
A further injury to Hazard could actually derail Chelsea’s campaign. The Blues are just about treading water at the moment, but his return is the motivating factor as they try to grind out results.
Conte, though, is less likely to withdraw the player than other managers. Having been an national team manager as well, he will be all too familiar with the difficulties of putting together a squad while minding the concerns of clubs.
Having said that, Chelsea may feasibly throw the injury explanation together. Hazard is still recovering and has not taken the field for the senior squad. Hence, the medical staff are well within their right to state that he is not ready for first team football in general.
