Rating Chelsea’s summer signings after bizarre transfer window
Willy Caballero – A
Chelsea replaced Bournemouth-bound Asmir Begovic with the experienced Willy Caballero. He came over for free after Manchester City released him at the end of last season.
This represented a shrewd signing by the Blues, as in one swift move they had had brought in top-level experience to the goalkeeping department and had also made a tidy profit of £10m.
Caballero had a decent record of 7 clean sheets in 23 appearances during his City career. He has often been described as a ‘safe’ goalkeeper. Hence, don’t expect him to be the Neuer-esque sweeper keeper. He also has a really good disciplinary record considering he often played behind the suicidal John Stones.
Caballero was often called upon by Pep Guardiola last season, as and when Claudio Bravo decided to forsake his primary duties as a goalkeeper. An example of this was Bravo’s famous handball against Barcelona in the Champions League last year, where he was sent off for his troubles. Caballero came on and saved a penalty from Neymar and played well in the return group game at the Etihad.
One hopes that Caballero will help in keeping Thibaut Courtois’ complacency in check and will perform if and when he is needed.
