Tiemoue Bakayoko is bullish about Chelsea’s prospects in the Champions League and the rest of the squad should take cue from his positive attitude.
Chelsea open their Champions League campaign on Tuesday night after a long year away from the competition. The club are not one of the favourites to win it, especially on the back of their summer transfer business, but Tiemoue Bakayoko is quietly confident.
Speaking about his preference between the Premier League and Champions League, the new Chelsea signing made no bones about his European dreams.
"I would choose the Champions League because it is an exceptionally difficult competition. It’s not easy to win, so you should always grasp the chance to win it…The Champions League puts the pressure on us, especially when playing for a very big club like Chelsea. Chelsea want to win so we want that atmosphere and that pressure. – via Evening Standard"
This is exactly the attitude Chelsea should carry into the Champions League. On paper, the Blues will not reach the final. They shouldn’t even reach the semi-finals. However, cup football presents any half-decent side with a chance. The Blues’ strongest eleven is certainly half-decent.
UCL Kick-Off: Chelsea welcome Qarabag FK to the magic of the Champions League
With the Premier League getting tougher each season, gaining qualification to the Champions League is harder and harder. Putting all the nonsense football bravado to one side, there are six or seven teams with a legitimate shot at finishing in the top four. A poor run of form could be the difference.
Hence, Chelsea should attack this trophy hunt with all guns blazing. The Blues have a tough task getting out of the group to begin with. There is little room for complacency and cruising. Qarabag must be dispatched clinically – goal difference may see Chelsea end up in the Europa League rather than the last 16.
The rest of squad should take Bakayoko’s cue and view this as a rare opportunity to capture Europe’s premier prize. Despite being weaker than their continental rivals, they should make up for their shortcomings with drive and determination.
After all, Antonio Conte’s men did win the Premier League last season. The talent is there to cause an upset and the right attitude will give them the edge over opponents who may be somewhat expecting to get through to the latter stages.
