Chelsea are reportedly poised to offer Cesc Fabregas a new contract as they respond to rumours linking him with a Manchester United move.

With Jose Mourinho still in the Premier League, he was always going to bother Chelsea from time to time. The latest reports claim that the Portuguese tactician is lining up a move for Cesc Fabregas. In order to ward off Manchester United’s interest, the Blues are going to chuck more money at their midfielder.

According to The Times, Chelsea are looking to hand Fabregas a contract extension in response to the rumours.

"Chelsea are ready to offer Cesc Fàbregas a new contract amid renewed interest in their midfielder from Manchester United. The Spain player has 18 months left on his deal at Stamford Bridge and the club want him to sign an extension."

This represents quite a change in fortunes for the Spaniard. When Antonio Conte took the reins at Stamford Bridge, Fabregas was merely a fringe player. However, he fought his way into the first team and became a vital part of Chelsea’s league success.

Having already lost Nemanja Matic to their direct rivals, the Blues do not want to hand United another fantastic talent. You could even say that Chelsea lost Romelu Lukaku to Mourinho, too.

Fabregas has around 18 months to run on his current deal and will likely leverage this situation to rinse the Blues. The club has a policy of only handing one-year extensions to players over 30 years of age. Fabregas may force Chelsea to make an exception, or make them stump up an excessively lucrative deal for one season.

Whatever the outcome, the Blues brass know that the only way to keep hold of Fabregas is through money. Reuniting with Mourinho and playing for Manchester United is an incredibly attractive prospect. If they go on to lift trophies again this year, you wouldn’t be able to begrudge Fabregas the move.
