Charly Musonda could be the latest Chelsea prospect to take his talent elsewhere
Amidst a supposed crisis in West London, Chelsea could be set to lose another talented youngster as Charly Musonda contemplates an exit.
Chelsea and their poor management of young talent is once again in the news as Charly Musonda has reportedly indicated his intention to leave. The Belgian has barely featured for the Blues this season and could be the latest in a line of precocious players to deem his future is best served elsewhere.
The Mirror claims that the midfielder is looking for a swift exit, with a January departure on his agenda.
"Charly Musonda has told Chelsea he wants to quit the club in January…Musonda, 21, is frustrated by the lack of opportunities at Chelsea after just four appearances this season, including two in the League Cup."
Musonda has been touted as one of Chelsea’s brightest prospects and was kept at Stamford Bridge to be a part of Antonio Conte’s first-team squad. However, as many feared, he has simply been there to make up the squad numbers.
He has made just two Premier League appearances, both as second-half substitutes, alongside two Carabao Cup games. At the age of 21, this is far from the regular football he desperately needs.
Conte’s reluctance to play him has forced Musonda to rethink his current career path. The Belgian is undoubtedly aware of the regular football his contemporary, Nathaniel Chalobah, is receiving having left in the summer. Knee surgery has interrupted his run in the Watford team.
Meanwhile, Nathan Ake is also playing regularly for Bournemouth while even Christian Atsu is enjoying consistent Premier League football at Newcastle. Bertrand Traore was another youngster to leave in the summer and he is currently leading the line for an impressive Lyon side.
Unfortunately for Blues fans, the bulk of the evidence suggests that Musonda should push for a move. Despite a number of injuries and some terrible form, Conte still hasn’t placed his faith in Musonda.
This appears to be another situation in which Chelsea’s selection philosophy is going to hurt them. While the likes of Mauricio Pochettino (and even Jose Mourinho) are giving academy talent regular football, the Blues are not.
If Musonda does angle for a transfer, no-one can blame him.
