Chelsea are reportedly still interested in bring Everton’s Ross Barkley to Stamford Bridge with another attempt to be made in January.

After failing quite spectacularly in the summer to sign Ross Barkley, Chelsea are reportedly lining up another effort in January. The Englishman u-turned on a Blues switch on transfer deadline day, but that hasn’t dampened the club’s interest in him.

According to The Telegraph, Chelsea have not changed their transfer targets amidst Michael Emenalo’s departure with Barkley a priority.

"Chelsea’s approach to the January transfer window will not be altered by Michael Emenalo’s surprise departure from the club this week. That means the Blues will continue with their efforts to try to sign a target man striker and will try again to sign Ross Barkley."

Chelsea’s pursuit of Barkley was one of the summer’s longest-running sagas. Everton finally accepted a bid for the midfielder on transfer deadline day. Barkley, though, got cold feet and canned the move. His current long-term injury was cited as a reason for him wanting to avoid change at the time.

With the Englishman expected back within a month or two, Chelsea are still keen on his services. Tottenham Hotspur have also reportedly maintained their interest and will provide the Blues with stiff competition.

Given Mauricio Pochettino’s track-record with both young talent and English talent, Barkley may well opt for Spurs over the Blues. Nevertheless, Chelsea will try to leverage their proven success to lure him to West London.

As the Blues look to negotiate this current tricky patch, the board is already looking at way to bolster squad in the new year. The festive period will be tough for all teams (even Manchester City) and a new signing could make the difference in the second half of the campaign.

With players tiring and picking up injuries, having more options will only help the Blues. Moreover, given his current injury, Barkley will be fresher than others.
