Chelsea’s January transfers: Who should the Blues buy, loan or sell?
4. Barrett Rouen
Buy: Alexis Sanchez
The Arsenal player is out of contract at the end of the season and Arsenal will be wanting to get something for him. Chelsea need to make this move because it improves them and directly helps them compete against Manchester City (who will also be interested).
If City get Sanchez there’ll be no tomorrow in the Premier League. However, Sanchez, Hazard and Morata would give Chelsea a fighting chance of reeling them in. Sanchez also is not cup-tied and could contribute mightily to a Champions League push.
Finally, in a World Cup year, most of Chelsea’s players will come back next season tired and/or out of shape and carrying knocks. Sanchez will not be competing and will help Chelsea get a leg up next season as well. This move would demonstrate the ambition Chelsea are supposed to have.
Loan: Charly Musonda
Musonda should be on loan at a team in the Premier League. He’s a member of the Tammy Abraham and Ruben Loftus-Cheek generation and should be coming through with them. All Chelsea are doing by having him on the bench is limiting his potential moving forward. He should be getting Premier League experience as soon as possible. West Ham, Newcastle and West Brom would all be good destinations for the youngster.
Sell: David Luiz
Luiz had a moment with the manager because he didn’t like his tactics. He did it publicly at the training ground and was dropped because of it. For the first time in nearly 5-8 years Chelsea have a manager who is winning the player-power battle. They made the right choice getting rid of Diego Costa and would be doing the right thing to say good-bye to Luiz as well.
Christensen should be the choice moving forward and Rudiger has enough versatility to provide cover across all of the defensive positions until this summer. Luiz should be sold to any team other than Real Madrid unless he publicly apologizes to Conte and the rest of the squad for his behavior.
If not this is one of those moves that is completely necessary. The team cannot be disturbed by a player’s allegiance to himself over his allegiance to the club. This sort of lack of discipline is what holds Chelsea back time and again.
