Attack

Brazil. WILLIAN . 7.5. Willian was Chelsea’s most creative and focussed player among the starting front-three. Michy Batshuayi was not the “reference point” Antonio Conte likes to see in his strikers, so bereft of a focal man and Eden Hazard’s creativity, Willian shouldered the responsibility to be the most creative and purposeful player. He knew just where to be for the goal, and made way for tactics more than performance.. 22

23. Belgium. MICHY BATSHUAYI. 5. Batshuayi was barely present for this game, which is the last thing his career needs. He only had one good run in on goal, which came to nothing as Artur Boruc came out hard to block him before Batshuayi could get a proper shot off. Alvaro Morata did not have too much involvement before his stoppage time goal, but his movement and presence opened up new options. Eden Hazard and the new formation was a part of that, but Batshuayi had everything in his favour given the starting lineup and formation.
PEDRO . 6.5. Pedro was more effective pressing Bournemouth when their defenders had the ball than he was in the attack when Chelsea had the ball. In the second half he started dropping deeper into last season’s version of the mini-3-5-2, pushing up to press and then recovering back. His skills as a high-pressing harasser have been under-utilized so far this season. It is a niche role, but one that Antonio Conte should not discount. If you’re a defender and a crazed hummingbird is spiraling at you, you are much more likely to bobble the ball or make an ill-conceived pass.. 11. Spain

Substitutes

6. Tiemoue Bakayoko’s short passing is one of the most incomprehensibly poor elements of his game. Obviously that is a core competency for any central midfielder, but his ability to move the ball quickly through tight spaces to turn onto the attack was one of his major attributes last season at AS Monaco. He reinforced Chelsea to survive Bournemouth’s second-half charge, though, and that is what ultimately mattered.
. 14. France. TIEMOUE BAKAYOKO

8.5. There should be no surprise that Eden Hazard is so much better than every other player on the pitch. It’s Eden Hazard, potential 2018 Ballon d’Or winner. However, Antonio Conte should be concerned that Hazard is so much better than the rest of his teammates combined. Or, if not all the rest, a thorough portion. From his first touch the result was no longer in doubt. Whether it would end 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1 Hazard brought the game to his level. He infused the Blues with confidence and checked back Bournemouth just enough that, if he had not created a stoppage time winner, he would have had a hand in one during extra time.
. 10. Belgium. EDEN HAZARD

7. Alvaro Morata did not do much, other than score the winning goal in stoppage time and antagonized Bournemouth’s players nearly to a Diego Costa level. Match official Lee Mason gave dubious yellow cards to each team after their late goals, meaning Morata will miss Chelsea’s weekend fixture at Everton. A few weeks ago that would have been no big deal, but now the Toffees have a Ronald Koeman offence atop a Sam Allardyce defence.
. 9. Spain. ALVARO MORATA
