Having already sealed a transfer for Ross Barkley, Chelsea have made another smart January move by extending Andreas Christensen’s contract.

As Chelsea look to make up for the summer’s awful transfer dealings, they have made another vital move. Andreas Christensen has agreed to a contract extension that will see him remain at Stamford Bridge until 2022.

Speaking about his new deal, the Dane was delighted.

"I’m just happy to be committed to Chelsea for the future. I’ve played a lot of games, I’m enjoying it at the club and everything is working well. – via chelseafc.com"

Christensen has come on leaps and bounds over the last year. The youngster made the most of the stability of his two year loan deal at Borussia Monchengladbach. He has since taken advantage of any opportunity that Antonio Conte has given him.

Since John Terry’s departure, Blues fans have been pining for a potential replacement. In Christensen, they may have just found the right person. And his contract extension is a step in the right direction.

Chelsea have a poor reputation of graduating their young players, but Christensen is an example of someone who deserves to be a Blues starter. The Dane proved that he had the required quality while out on loan and he has shown that he has what it takes this season.

With the likes of Thibaut Courtois and Eden Hazard continuing to play hard-ball with their extension, this new deal is important. The defender has been linked with moves away based on his performances and Chelsea needed to extend his deal to both keep a key player and signal their intent.

Courtois and Hazard may be seeking to see out their deals, but Christensen’s new contract means that the Blues will get full value should he want to leave. Hopefully, Christensen will take this extension as proof of Chelsea’s commitment to him. However, if he doesn’t, Chelsea will be well placed to get their money’s worth.

After a shambolic summer transfer window, Chelsea seem to be trying their best to make amends. No matter what you think about Ross Barkley, that transfer was a bargain. Meanwhile, almost all fans wanted Christensen to extend his stay.
