Antonio Conte recently gave another interview full of more honesty and common sense than ever goes over well at Stamford Bridge. His days as Chelsea manager will be numbered from here on out.

In his most recent press conference, Antonio Conte voiced his opinion that Chelsea had too much turnover to make a good enough squad to keep up with Manchester City. This is hardly an unusual or fringe sentiment. As this column has chronicled too many times, Chelsea do poor transfer business. That’s really all there is to say about it.

When a club is doing the right amount of business – both incoming and outgoing – they limit the turnover within the squad. They maintain balance. No more than 3-5 total transactions. Chelsea, on the other hand, have brought in seven players and sent out another three for sale or because their contracts ended. Add in the ridiculous loan system and Chelsea have a wildly unstable group of players.

The manner in which Chelsea handle their transfer business is – at best – elementary. At worst, it’s simply foolish and idiotic. Take your pick.

Antonio Conte needs a group of players who are stable and accountable. At the moment, Chelsea FC have a perfect system for a lack of accountability from the players. They have put in place a system that invariably leads to the sort of spineless, weak, pathetic and cowardly performance they put in against Bournemouth.

Chelsea continuously manage to misspend their money. They can afford to spend £200 million in every summer transfer window. They would be better off playing more of the youth players and adding players of ridiculous quality.

For instance, if Chelsea are going to buy players they should buy Philippe Coutinho, Paulo Dybala or even Neymar. These are players in the £140 – 200 million bracket. It’s hard not to imagine a team with Nathaniel Chalobah, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, N’Golo Kante, Eden Hazard and Neymar is far superior to one with Danny Drinkwater, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Kante, Hazard and Olivier Giroud or Alvaro Morata.

Chelsea spend money but they spend it poorly. They get away with covering up the traces of mismanagement that always accompany their shortsighted approach to football. Rather than having a genuine progress cycle of developing and building a team over 3-4 years, Chelsea begin again with a new manager and new relationships every two years. It’s ridiculous.

Chelsea do not want a manager. They do not even want a coach.  They simply want a puppet who will allow those higher-ups to do whatever it is they want without any form of protest.

Antonio Conte will most likely be fired for his honest approach to Chelsea’s transfer mismanagement. He is merely stating simple truths. Chelsea have managed their business poorly for ages. It is a testament to how good a manager Conte is that they won the Premier League last season. Conte’s skill was a bandage on a bone long broken.

It is sad to see what could have grown to be such a perfect relationship sour in this way. But this is an all too familiar script at Stamford Bridge. All those associated with the club know exactly how it will end.
