John Terry has departed Aston Villa after they failed to secure promotion. He is now set to complete a Chelsea triumvirate at Derby.

Frank Lampard started his managerial career by taking the the reigns of Derby County in the Championship. Chelsea youth manager Jody Morris joined him as his assistant manager. Both did so, in part, because Chelsea was not offering them the opportunities they needed to grow.

Elsewhere in the Championship, John Terry departed Aston Villa after they failed to secure promotion. A free agent with a desire to play, he is now being linked to Lampard’s Derby County. If he does join Derby, he will complete a triumvirate of Chelsea boys in the Championship. Together, they can rise up into the Premier League and perhaps even find their path back to the Blues.

Terry at Derby makes a ton of sense. He won plaudits last season for his performances despite spending a great deal of time injured. Terry’s leadership and skill are known qualities that any team will want to have.

Furthermore, Terry immediately adds a veteran presence that can vouch for Lampard and Morris. One of the hardest jobs any new management team has is convincing the squad to buy into their philosophies. Terry would be a calming voice among the players to convince them to buy in.

Terry would also help with the integration of youth players. Lampard and Terry both were heavily involved with mentoring youth at Chelsea. Morris too for obvious reasons. But sometimes, the mentoring has to come from someone currently experiencing the same things. Terry, by virtue of still playing, can fill that role.

And if any Chelsea youth go on loan to Derby, as they should, they will be well taken care of. Terry knows how to mentor youth, as do the other two key Chelsea figures at Derby. Any Chelsea players that go to Derby will know all three and all three will know them. That helps to ease the transition into a new team and can start their growth as players.

Terry can also add another layer to the coaching staff’s managerial ability. Morris is the most experienced of the three at actual management, but it has only been at youth level. Lampard and Terry have both been working on their coaching badges, but have no actual experience heading into the season together.

But all three have the training and the experience under a plethora of managers. The three will have taken different and similar things from the likes of Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, Antonio Conte, and many more. Together, they can help fill in the gaps that the others have and create a winning Derby side.

Chelsea fans will watch the triumvirate at Derby with great interest. They have all the skills and talents to have a successful season in the Championship. Then, the three can set about having Premier League success before ultimately coming home to the Blues.

Wiser and with experience, they can add a new layer to Chelsea’s history. But first, they must conquer the Championship together.
