Chelsea want pie in the sky after Aleksandr Golovin transfer heartbreak
By Travis Tyler
Chelsea (and more appropriately, Roman Abramovich) really wanted Aleksandr Golovin in blue. That failed and now Chelsea look towards the near impossible.
Chelsea has fallen into the trap of many star crossed lovers; they waited too long to make their move and saw their target of affection run off with some other club. The Blues (mostly the owner) wanted Russian wonder kid Golovin to come to Chelsea. But despite rumors of the move being done, the young star ended up going to AS Monaco.
It is interesting to note that Michael Emenalo was the match maker here. He spurned his former club by connecting Golovin with Monaco. In the long run, that is but a drop in the ocean. But it will still make Chelsea (again, mostly Abramovich) upset.
But, not to rest on their laurels, the Blues have quickly diverted their attention to new targets. Though, the new targets are a bit of an over compensation for losing out on Golovin. The Blues want the pie in the sky targets as they stress eat their way back to the Champions League.
First up is the most “likely” target in Miralem Pjanic. If rumors are to be believed, Chelsea is already negotiating with Juventus for Gonzalo Higuain and Daniele Rugani. Why not make it a triple and pay for Cristiano Ronaldo’s transfer and then some!
Next most “likely” is Sergej Milinkovic-Savic of Lazio. He has been described as similar to Paul Pogba (circa Serie A) and would be familiar to Maurizio Sarri from the previous few seasons. Big, strong, and powerful, he would be a fine addition to the Chelsea midfield.
Finally, the least most “likely” is Thiago from Barcelona. One of Pep Guardiola’s favorites, he would do well in any type of similar system. Bayern Munich has already poured cold water on the deal, but when has that ever stopped anything?
Likely is put in quotes for all three because there is a less than one percent chance any of them will happen. All three would demand eight or perhaps even nine figure transfer fees. The Blues may want a new midfielder, but not that badly.
Of course, there is another pie in the sky option. The ones the Blues already have. Much like the friend not taking seriously who then turns out to be perfect, Chelsea has Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ross Barkley to turn to.
Barkley already showed his credentials against Perth, but of course, it was only Perth. Loftus-Cheek is not due back for some time yet, but his brief (yet misused) cameos in the World Cup were promising. And there is always Cesc Fabregas to shrug off his walker for yet another season as a starter.
That is unlikely only in that it seems unlikely the Blues would not buy a new midfielder. There has been too much smoke all window that Chelsea has been in the hunt. Whether it happens or not is another story, but the interest is there. It will be up to Barkley, Loftus-Cheek, and perhaps even Fabregas to fight their way into Chelsea’s affections while they still have a chance.
