Chelsea’s plans for Tammy Abraham remain up in the air. Regardless of what happens, he will make it in the Premier League with or without the Blues.
With Chelsea’s transfer ban forever shrouded in mystery, it is still unclear as to what future lies ahead of Tammy Abraham. He has proven himself to be an amazing Championship striker in two seasons with two different clubs but had a lull with Swansea in the Premier League in between.
If Aston Villa comes up, they want to keep Abraham around for £25 million. If that sounds unreasonably low, it is because it is. But it is also the type of price Chelsea would haggle over for a few weeks before accepting something close to that number. Abraham’s future is in flux except for one detail: he will become a Premier League striker with or without a Chelsea shirt on.
Abraham is only 21 years old but in his two Championship seasons he has scored 46 league or playoff goals. His time at Swansea will not be remembered but at the time they had just sold their only playmaker. Abraham was the type of striker that could only score with service until this season at Villa. Now he is much more involved off the ball and he is much better prepared for Premier League football.
With a ban, Chelsea has a place for the Englishman. His competition would likely be only Michy Batshuayi with Olivier Giroud and Gonzalo Higuain likely to go and Alvaro Morata unlikely to be brought back. Is he ready to lead the line at a club like Chelsea? It is really hard to judge that with strikers since the service between teams like Aston Villa, Swansea, and Bristol City is so much different than it would be at Stamford Bridge.
Without the ban, Chelsea is sure to go into the market for a striker or two. Maurizio Sarri has already said he wants Higuain to return and most of the rumors point towards interest in Luka Jovic. In that event, it would not be surprising for Abraham to do what Romelu Lukaku did when Diego Costa came in a clogged the pipeline.
It is not as though Aston Villa in the Premier League would be the first Premier League club to inquire about Abraham. Wolverhampton Wanderers wanted him in their pursuit to best of the rest in the Premier League. He opted to stay at the eleventh hour to help the playoff push and that mission was accomplished.
Aston Villa coming up would be the most likely destination but it would not be surprising to see Wolverhampton come back in for the striker. It would not be surprising to see other midtable clubs join in. Chelsea would surely push for a loan, but if Abraham pushes for something more permanent with the Blues able to dip into the market, they Blues would likely cave to the demands.
Ideally, Chelsea recognizes the talent they have and finds a spot for Abraham next season regardless of the ban. He would not return to be third in the rotation, however, and that is something Chelsea should consider.
Regardless, Abraham is poised to play in the Premier League next season and for many years to come. It will be up to Chelsea and their planners what shirt he wears in those years.
