Frank Lampard’s relative inexperience has sparked many articles doubting him and Chelsea. The Blues do their best work when the world is against them.

Frank Lampard has finally come home to Chelsea. It has been an open secret for the past month and rumored for longer than that. For the most part, the fan base is ecstatic in a way they have not been for years. But there is still plenty of “yes but”.

Mentioning that Lampard is inexperienced “but I will support him” is hardly a new or creative thought. Fans have been talking about it since the rumors first came about. On the day he is announced, they are unnecessary. Everyone knows he is inexperienced. That is not new information.

The media has played their part in this too as they always do. Even now, articles are being written about how Chelsea is making this move more out of sentimentality than thought. And all these articles do is play into the Blues’ hand. Chelsea does their best work with their back against the wall and the world against them and the doubters everywhere. It is part of the club’s DNA.

Jose Mourinho tapped into this part of Chelsea more than anyone. He understood that much of the core of Chelsea still predated Roman Abramovich’s cash. He helped to build that culture that lingered and pulled the Blues over the line time and time again. Key to that culture was Lampard.

Lampard can flame that spark back into a fire. In his first presser, he did not shy away from his inexperience. Instead, he welcomed another challenge. Lampard has always looked for the next, biggest dragon to slay and now he has found one.

Even when asked about expectations in light of the transfer ban and loss of Eden Hazard, Lampard did not shy away. To him, Chelsea is not just a club that should be in the Champions League, but a club that should be competing on all fronts. He understands the gap between the Blues and Liverpool and City was massive last season, but right now it is at zero. He said he was a realist, but to him realism is Chelsea competing on all fronts. He started by setting the bar high.

And while Lampard does that, many will question his slip ups. They will come from inside the club and outside. But that is where Chelsea has done their best work; when the world doubts.

So please, keep doubting Lampard’s Chelsea. The club rode doubt to four Premier League titles and a Champions League. The club now has a manger who is hungry for more and will not be satisfied. There will be new players hungry for more than they ever got before.

The world can doubt, but Lampard will not. He trusts himself, his staff, and his players to rise to the challenge. Chelsea is a club that competes on all fronts at full speed, and Lampard will be the man who leads them.
