Chelsea and Hudson-Odoi nowhere close to justifying £200,000 per week

Chelsea are supposedly offering Callum Hudson-Odoi £200,000 per week if he will just finally sign an extension. Hopefully someone over there can justify this decision, because we can’t.

Isn’t it refreshing to know that Chelsea is always one split-second away from doing something outrageous? The thought of it makes me sleep like a baby. It’s getting ridiculous how psychic we’re getting in this place. George was saying just last month how Chelsea is distorting the transfer market DESPITE the ban and, as if to laugh in his face, they (supposedly) offer an 18-year old, with a dozen Premier League appearances under his belt, £200,000 per week. This is – and I’m being nice here – absurd.

A lot of people are not going to want to hear this, but if this rumor is true, it the dumbest decision Chelsea could make, and they’ve made some… eh, funny decisions.

I sincerely hope I’m wrong. Precisely what thought and consideration went into this contract offer? How could they possibly justify the decision? It’s hard to believe they have truly considered the future implications of this deal yet. The club is under a transfer ban, and they behave as though they’ll never be able to sign players again? Magnificent.

Callum Hudson-Odoi is an exciting player, nobody would argue that point. The Jadon Sancho arguments are just over the horizon. The difference is that Sancho is already a regular starter for his club, having made numerous Champions League appearances.

This is not to say that Hudson-Odoi and Sancho cannot be compared in terms of ability, simply that they do not play the same roles for their clubs. Sancho is a key player while Hudson-Odoi is yet to become a regular in his own team. Hudson-Odoi is one of the youngest Chelsea players in the senior squad.

The club is looking for trouble by making him the second-highest paid player in the team, and don’t give me the nonsense about talent. By paying Hudson-Odoi £200,000 per week, they are all but inviting other players, more important players, to grow dissatisfied with their wages. When that happens, some Chelsea fans will call out their “entitled” attitudes and mention buzzwords like “player power.”

When the ban is over – or lifted – Chelsea would need to buy players. Potential signings are going to demand ridiculous wages, and why? Because Chelsea has begged them to.

It would have been better – for both parties – if Chelsea had offered a contract that had a clause that entitled Hudson-Odoi to salary increments, tied to performances. That way they don’t do the stupid thing they’re about to do, and Hudson-Odoi is motivated to out-do himself, every week.

Hudson-Odoi started three Premier League matches last season and registered only one goal contribution, an assist. For someone who is yet to set the Premier League alight, £200,000 per week is silly.

I don’t know what plans Lampard has for Hudson-Odoi, I don’t care. Callum Hudson-Odoi should not be getting paid £200,000 each week. If Chelsea decide to go through with it, it better be worth it, because he has not earned it.

Again. I hope I’m wrong. I really do.
