Chelsea start off 2020 on the south coast against Brighton, where many of our writers are staying with the theme of the year and predicting a 2-0 win.

Someone check on Ross Barkley. He has not been playing much and seems to have a penchant for tying one on. Chelsea will look to stay festive and avoid a post-win and post-NYE hangover with a win to start the new year and new decade.

Varun Dani: Brighton 0 – 2 Chelsea. Last prediction of the year for the first game of 2020 for a seemingly unpredictable side… might I finally get my maiden correct prediction?

Brighton have gone under the radar and are having quite a solid season, and they’ll go into this knowing Chelsea have a motivation problem against midtable oppositions. Let’s hope Frank Lampard slaps the boys out of their New Year’s Eve hangover and they get the job done. Expect a highly cagey, disciplined affair.

Abhishek Pancholi: 0 – 2. This would be the game to cure all New Year’s hangovers. Brighton won’t make it easy for Chelsea, attacking relentlessly in the first 15 minutes, causing panic but unable to score. After that, the Blues will take control of the game, leading to a Tammy Abraham goal.

Brighton will give up after 15 minutes of hassling and harrying in the second half, allowing Willian to double the scoreline. A happy new year and three points to go with it.

Barrett Rouen: 1 – 2. There’s still nothing to like about the Blues’ defending and I expect the up and down nature of the season to continue. Chelsea won’t put in a good performance, but may just scrape a win against a side struggling more than them.

Scott Brant: 0 – 1. Instead of predicting a 2-1 scoreline for the rest of the season, which would be incredibly simple and boring, I will go out on a limb and say that Chelsea keep Brighton off the scoresheet entirely. The first half will be mind numbing, followed by a mostly tedious second half, only to be saved by Tammy Abraham.

Chelsea get the needed three points and move on to the FA Cup tie against Nottingham Forest.

Kevin Peacock: 0 – 3. With Frank Lampard’s halftime words from the Emirates still ringing in the players’ ears, they follow up the good win at Arsenal with a storming victory at Brighton, finally sticking it to the south coast man.

They’ll have learnt from previous games to follow a good win p with an even better one. Tambraham remains on fire slotting in two goals, with Mason Mount rekindling some of that scoring form from earlier in the season.

Vansh Ambashta: 0 – 2. The Blues are winning this. New Year. New Decade. Time for Lampard’s Era.

Olaoluwa Nwobodo: 1 – 2. Chelsea has a good record against Brighton: they have not failed to win against Brighton in the Premier League so far, but of course there’s always a first time for everything. I’m hoping Marcos Alonso is match fit and can return to the line-up.

Chelsea has been in roller coaster form this season. Frank Lampard will likely return to a back four, Brighton will likely be compact and create problems for Chelsea. Water is wet. Same old, same old. Goals from Willian and Mount.
