Marc Guehi has been a cup star for Chelsea this season but is set for a loan. The format of it is new to the loan army and could be a turning point.

Getting loans right is harder than it seems. Even a seemingly perfect loan can implode if a single variable becomes off kilter. Loans also have to be challenging (otherwise the player will not improve) but not so challenging the player cannot find their way into playing time.

Stability is often mentioned by the players out on loan but is rarely brought up in regards to going on loan. It is hard to bounce from one club or league from year to year until a road block is hit or the Chelsea first team calls. Rarely do loans go over a length of time in one location.

Marc Guehi is the latest set to head out on loan. Swansea seems to be the destination for the next 18 months, beating out Premier League clubs for Guehi’s signature. This is a new type of loan that could arguably be much better for Guehi than the alternative.

First of all, the longer length of the loan incentives Swansea to integrate Guehi into the side. They know he will not disappear six months from now so they can start playing him and forging relationships around him with less fear. It is not at all unusual for a player to spend a year or two at a club that size so that would be something normal for them.

Guehi would also be challenged while surely receiving playing time. He has started against the likes of Manchester United this season, but that was with Premier League teammates. At least six months in the Championship is a good run in for him as he settles in.

Furthermore, Swansea is in the promotion race. Chelsea is surely looking at this loan as six months to settle in a Championship side and (hopefully) 12 months as a locked in starter for a Premier League side. That still gets Guehi into a Premier League loan, but with the added benefit of being settled in already.

It is unknown if Chelsea has a break clause if Swansea does not achieve promotion but it is somewhat of a win win regardless. Chelsea gets the best of the Championship loan and hopefully the best of the Premier League style loan too.

This situation is not impossible to replicate. Chelsea has seemingly stepped away from first loans to the Netherlands and moved on to first loans in the Championship or League One. If the player is able to go on loan to a club fighting for promotion, it makes sense to make the loan as long as possible given the possibility the player could naturally move up between the leagues.

Guehi is a fine defender who can go to Swansea and make a name for himself. If he can help them get promoted it will be all the better to see him in the Premier League next season. It is a loan style the Blues can only benefit from.
