The Chelsea Women could be robbed of a historic season should the FA decide not to resume the season amidst Coronavirus.

Chelsea currently sits second in the FA Women’s Super League. The Blues are one point behind Manchester City with a game in-hand. If the FA decides to cancel the season or end the league and keep the current table, Chelsea will be cheated out of a title it rightly earned.

The Blues have played 14 matches this season. In those games, the Blues are unbeaten with 12 wins and two draws. Luckily enough for Chelsea, one of the rumors being tossed around revolves around finishing the season in six weeks with play being resumed in June. Chelsea manager Emma Hayes has been particularly vocal about the women’s game resuming when the men do.

Unfortunately for the Blues, there haven’t been any developments on the FAWSL front in a matter of weeks. Considering the other rumor gaining steam is the idea of voiding the season, this is cause for concern. Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal have run away with the league thus far. Third place Arsenal leads fourth place Manchester United by 13 points, so it’s not far-fetched to see 2/3 of the teams approving voiding the season.

If the league is cancelled, the FA has two options: void the season or end play with the current results being finalized. If the current table holds, it would cause a sticky situation for the league’s decision makers. City sit first, but Chelsea has a game in-hand and sits one point back. The Blues also have the head-to-head advantage over City, earning a win and a draw over two legs. Thus, handing a title to City would be criminal.

The Blues have become one of the top women’s clubs in the world with two consecutive UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final appearances. They failed to qualify for the competition this season, but are in a position to do so next year as things stand. Voiding the season would potentially prevent them from making the competition in back-to-back seasons. Much like in the men’s game, missing Champions League football in back-to-back years does damage to a club’s reputation.

In addition to being unbeaten in the league, the Blues have already won the title in the FA Women’s League Cup. A double is in sight, but only if play resumes. If the FA decides to go ahead with its proposed six-week plan, Chelsea has a chance at securing its second league title in three seasons.

Next. Premier League return becomes increasingly pointless for Chelsea. dark

Voiding the season is the worst thing that could happen for the Blues. Chelsea has a chance to not only win its second trophy of the season, but do so with style. An undefeated season would be a cherry on top for the Blues. No pressure, FA.
