3. Thomas Meunier-Oliver Smith

Chelsea have an abundance of talent in the midfield, and (with Pedro and Willian still at the club) just enough up front to be passable. However, the championship winning teams of Chelsea past have been built on a rock solid defense and this current edition of the Blues cannot claim that tag line. With Antonio Rudiger the only exception there is a need for upgrades across the backline so come on in Thomas Meunier.

The Belgian is, of course, a right back but hear me out. The backline’s biggest weakness is at left back where Marcos Alonso and Emerson have personified mediocrity in recent months. To fix that problem (for now) means the shifting Cesar Azpilicueta across to left back where he rose to fame and outplayed, before eventually replacing, one of the best English left backs of all time in Ashley Cole.

Reece James is no doubt the future but he cannot play the whole season on his own so bringing in a 28 year old Meunier, a proven international and a decorated winner will aid the Blues immensely. Plus (and it is weird saying this about a Chelsea team) it will bring in some experience that means a lot down the stretch. Meunier will help solidify their back line and while Frank Lampard still waits for his ideal man in Ben Chilwell, having “Dave” patrol the left flank is a far more soothing proposition for Chelsea fans than Emerson or Alonso.
