4. Angel Gomes-Varun Dani

While most high profile free-agent deals revolve around experienced players looking for a new challenge, rarely does the opportunity come along where a club has the chance to snap up one of the best prospects from a rival’s academy for absolutely nothing. Such is the case with Angel Gomes and Chelsea.

While recent links of this deal could just be paper talk, there are certain underlying themes that make the move sensible. If the recent stories of the club targeting the likes Timo Werner, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Phillipe Coutinho have any shroud of truth to them, it would seem like Lampard is looking for players who can play cover two positions at once, particularly higher up the field.

Take only Coutinho for example and there are certain similarities with Gomes in terms of attributes. Both are players who excel as central attacking midfielders but can be played on the wing for cover. Both are luxury players who could help break down low blocks, a problem the current Chelsea squad faces consistently.

From Gomes’s perspective, his reason to leave United would be due to the lack of game time he is receiving, making Lampard’s youth revolution a very lucrative destination.

This deal could turn out to be a masterstroke like Paul Pogba to Juventus or an utter failure like Dominic Solanke to Liverpool. Either way, it is not going to cost Chelsea a penny to try.
