Bonus: Thiago Silva

In terms of the players Chelsea should add, the Blues are in a peculiar situation.

They seem to have their long-term future sorted, but just need a little bit of help getting there in the short term. A player like Thiago Silva is the perfect player for this. He has as much high-level experience as you can ask for and is exactly the sort of rough, tough, but still mobile modern centerback that football is built around now. He and Sergio Ramos are exactly the sort of players those like Ethan Ampadu and Fikayo Tomori should be emulating and Silva at least lacks the tempestuousness of the latter.

Being able to bring Silva in for a couple of years to play 12-18 matches a season and teach the two recently named youngsters would be invaluable. He’s a known leader and can fill in exactly where Chelsea need. Unfortunately, the defence is still Chelsea’s biggest issue. Silva helps with literally every part of it. Where Zouma shows a high ceiling, but lacks refinement and is getting dangerously close to not turning the corner, he needs to see if Silva can help him. Where Rudiger lacks game reading and tactical acuity, Silva can help him. Where Tomori is raw and explosive, Silva can help him. Finally, where Ampadu is simply the best-untapped potential at the position in Britain, Silva can help him.

A little South American and Continental influence on a player of Ampadu’s ability could be the sort of thing that gives Chelsea 12 years of the best defender in England. Bringing in Silva with the understanding he is in London perhaps more for his experience, intelligence and character rather than his play could be a wonderful aid to Frank Lampard in his continued mentorship and coaching of the youth revolution.
