Abhishek Pancholi: Cancel and void because returning is a farce

Cancel it. Void the season. And not just for the hilariousness that will ensue if Liverpool are denied the title.

Many players are fearful of restarting the league, and rightly so. N’Golo Kante has already opted to sit out the remaining games, and who can blame him? Troy Deeney also echoed those sentiments. So did Danny Rose and several others who do not want to bring the virus back home to their families. If that is, inexplicably, not reason enough to cancel any plans of restarting the league, perhaps the often used cliche called “sanctity of the competition” might be.

What happens if half of Watford’s first team squad refuses to play? Do Watford field a team of greenhorns and act as cannon fodder for the opposition? Or what if Arsenal’s best players follow Kante’s lead and decide to stay home instead of risking their lives and the lives of their families, in pursuit of a top four place? And before you say it, this situation would hardly be comparable to an injury crisis when players would simply be unfit and unavailable, not staying home fearing for their health.

Are the FA so desperate for Liverpool to add another title to their collection that they would persist with such a farce? Would having a massive asterisk next to the 19/20 title alongside the number of players infected as a result of “Project Restart” be really worth it? Will anyone ever let the FA forget about what they did to hand Liverpool the title (and I am not just talking about VAR)? No, no and a massive no.
