Chelsea is working hard to reinforce their attack with a big name signing. Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount will need to hit the ground running.

Make no mistake; Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount are Chelsea’s future. The ideal path forward for the Blues involves both, heavily involved, for years to come. They have been vital to the club’s efforts this season and both have the potential to be even better.

That being said, Chelsea is on the precipice of greatness like so many times before. The youth revolution has been very much needed, but now the Blues need two or three finished products to complete the team. The Blues are pushing hard for those to be big name, marquee signings, particularly of the attacking mold.

The club will need to do a delicate balancing act between the youth they are bringing through and the stars they are chasing. But Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount will at least have a head start on whoever the club can bring in. Both need to hit the ground running to keep their names on the team sheet if the Blues sign players in similar roles as them.

Abraham has more than shown his ability this season, but his recent injury issues showed that there were other options that were just as capable. Ideally, the club is looking for a player that can supplement or deputize Abraham rather than directly challenge him. But that does not mean he will not be challenged at all.

Timo Werner is the biggest name linked and that rumor seems to be getting hot once again. Liverpool still seems to be leading the race, but there is the possibility that Chelsea offers Werner more playing time than the Reds. Werner has traditionally played in a front two formation, but he could also slot in to the left or right of Abraham in a 4-3-3. They can easily coexist, but Abraham needs to return and make the case for that rather than the bench.

Mount’s situation is trickier. He is arguably the player most suited to Frank Lampard’s tactics but he is also somewhat of an awkward player stylistically. He would almost be ideal for the wing, as much as Chelsea uses wingers, but that position is quite stacked. Hakim Ziyech joining also puts the crunch on Mount’s playing time.

So if Chelsea was to go out and splash the cash on Kai Havertz or Jadon Sancho, Mount would have a steep amount of competition. Mount could theoretically play in four positions in a 4-3-3, but if two of those are already taken up by Ziyech and Havertz or Sancho, then the chances of Mount playing continue to drop.

But again, Mount gets the tactics and, despite the boo boys, has been one of Chelsea’s best players overall this season. He is far from the finished product and can improve, but that is on him when play resumes. Chelsea will not stop their hunt for a big name player, but Mount can make sure his name is included on the team sheet with them.

Abraham and Mount have been integral to the club this season. They need to continue to be once play resumes. Chelsea is gearing up to splash the cash and both players need to ensure that they are just as included on future team sheets as the new guys. That hard work begins as soon as the Premier League resumes.
