Chelsea fans given agonizing reminder about transfer market
Chelsea fans are getting a blast from the past by being reminded just how agonizing the wait time associated with the transfer market can be.
Nine days. It has been nine days since Fabrizio Romano tweeted out information regarding Timo Werner’s alleged transfer to Chelsea. In the time since then, fans have been jerked around in every possible direction and taunted by phrases like ‘within the next few days’, ‘soon’ and ‘imminent’.
Chelsea fans are being given a painful reminder as to just how cruel the transfer market can be. The exchange of a player for millions of pounds between two clubs separated by over 1,000 kilometers is not a quick process. However, as supporters, we want the news and we want it now. Not only that, but fans only hear what they want to hear and that’s a dangerous game to play.
Transfers take time. Waiting around for an official announcement will only drag the process out. Chances are, if Romano is tweeting about it, it’s going to happen. Football fans as a whole are a greedy bunch, that’s no secret. Supporters are seemingly chasing the “here we go!” high immediately after the clubs confirm the deals on Twitter. Where does it end?
Chelsea fans are bombarding the club’s official social media feeds with comments like “announce Werner”—and regardless of intent—that only sets them up to be disappointed. The world of transfers is a cruel one. It’s like a drug that leaves you itching for more after you get the first taste. After the club signs Werner (assuming the deal is still on), fans will seemingly drop it and focus all of their attention on another linked individual, like Kai Havertz. Look no further than Hakim Ziyech’s treatment once the Werner and Havertz links started.
While it’s a wonderful thing to see Chelsea linked with players like Werner, Havertz, Ben Chilwell, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Philippe Coutinho, not all of those transfers are bound to happen. Feeding those rumors and giving them life only make the pain worse when the club ends up with somebody else or the players end up somewhere else.
Don’t fall into the trap of football twitter, let the official announcement come as a surprise and celebrate in the moment, you’ll be better off for it. Chelsea fans know all too well about grasping for straws. The sheer mention of the phrase “48 hours” is enough to drive a Blues fan over the edge following the suffering it caused supporters back in 2018.
Lastly, let’s be realistic about things; let’s try and help each other out during these trying times. If you see a fellow fan waiting around for a “Comunicado Oficial”, reach out to them and take their mind off this transaction. Ask them if the hell is worth the high. It’s a painful process and a seemingly never ending waiting game, but we’re all in it together.
