Chelsea: Three lessons learnt against Aston Villa on league’s return
By Tan Yi Hao
3. The great comeback and the even greater show of character
When Aston Villa took the lead near the end of the first game against the run of play, it was the ultimate definition of a sucker punch. Perhaps the Chelsea of old would have collapsed following such an unlikely setback as games against Bournemouth and West Ham have shown.
However, a Pulisic led comeback shortly after the restart made it clear just how far Frank Lampard’s Chelsea have come since the 4-0 drubbing by Manchester United on opening weekend.
Undeterred by Hause’s opener, Chelsea continued on with their game plan, ultimately registering 18 shots in total and finding the net twice in quick succession. Considering Aston Villa’s immediate move into a low block upon scoring, as well as the Blues’ previous struggles with deep lying defenses, Chelsea’s fightback becomes all the more impressive.
With Lampard having promised that the players’ knowledge of what is at stake remains unchanged despite the absence of fans from the stadiums, Sunday’s remarkable comeback win over Aston Villa more than validates Lampard’s belief in his players. Now, all that’s left is the small matter of keeping the momentum going for the remainder of the season and who knows, perhaps even lift a trophy at the end of it.
