Chelsea player ratings: A tribute to 3, our shirt sponsor and new curse
N’Golo Kante (Midfielder): 6
Kante wasn’t bad. His passes looked a little lethargic, but he flew around the pitch with usual speed. One of the few players who looked like he gave a stuff and therefore, the Frenchman is one of the few players given somewhat of a pass from harsh criticism.
Mateo Kovacic (Midfielder): 6
Mateo Kovacic played well. He was substituted for more attacking threats, not as a reaction to a poor performance. One has to wonder, however, what Frank Lampard was thinking when taking off Kovacic instead of Barkley.
Ross Barkley (Midfielder): 0
If anybody saw the City of London Police at the London Stadium on Wednesday, don’t be alarmed, they were just investigating the disappearance of a 26-year-old Englishman named Ross Barkley. The midfielder is the only one on this list to receive a special rating of zero. I felt it would’ve been unfair to Barkley to give him a rating when quite frankly, I seldom saw him on the pitch.
Mason Mount (Midfielder): 6
Mount should’ve started this match, but hindsight is 20/20. The youngster provided a spark for the Blues when he came on in the second half, making fans wonder what he could’ve done across a full 90 minutes of action. In the end, it wasn’t enough to carry the Blues to victory. However, none of Chelsea’s woes against West Ham came at the midfielder’s expense.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Midfielder): 6
Loftus-Cheek continued to impress on his road to recovery. One of the few positive takeaways from this match was the fitness of Lofus-Cheek. After an abysmal display at Aston Villa, the occasional minutes here and there have helped the Englishman take one step at a time. He looked comfortable in midfield and his presence saw the Blues centralize their attack and pressure towards the end of the half. If Chelsea is going to break down teams who park all XI men behind the ball, Loftus-Cheek will need to play a role.
