Chelsea predicted XI: Realigning and rotating for Watford
N’Golo Kante, 7, France, Defensive midfield
Kante did his job. Very well. Again. Kante completed 93 percent of his passes, and only lost the ball six times. He made three tackles and one interception. Chelsea had 72 percent of the ball, so Kante did not find himself in many positions to make tackles and interceptions. Kante has been comfortable playing as the deepest midfielder so far, he has brought some stability to Chelsea’s midfield. Kante has continued to show why he’s the perfect midfielder, and why he will keep starting. And to think that some people thought Kante would have to make way for Jorginho.
Ross Barkley, 8, England, Center midfield
Mateo Kovacic is out injured for Watford, which leaves Ross Barkley with a chance for redemption. He had been doing better as of late (largely as a substitute) but his game against West Ham was just bad. He is expendable compared to the rest of the midfielders, so he needs a good game to show he can still offer something to Chelsea.
Mason Mount, 19, England, Center midfield
Mount’s energy was missed against West Ham. The game changed considerably when he was brought on. His work rate gives Chelsea an advantage and would be especially needed considering that Watford players are not renowned for laziness. Chelsea cannot afford to switch off against a team like Watford, Liverpool can tell all about that switching off thing. Chelsea has to be on their toes throughout the game. Mount would help coordinate Chelsea’s pressing. His mobility and defensive awareness are assets that would not hurt Chelsea against Watford.
