The State of the Blue-nion is back; Chelsea had a busy month of June that included winning the FAWSL title and signing Timo Werner.

June had everything. The month the Premier League restarted featured massive victories, unimaginable signings, encouraging transfer rumors and even a trophy for the Chelsea FC Women. The Blues signed Timo Werner to add to their arsenal of attacking players; with he and Hakim Ziyech officially became Chelsea players at midnight on July 1. The Blues continued their winning streak through the end of June and put themselves in a good position to clinch a Champions League place.

Let’s take a look at June’s Match of the Month, the first team’s star and underwhelming performers, the women’s team, a loanee and the biggest transfer rumor involving Chelsea. Further, we’ll get you ready for July in this month’s State of the Blue-nion.

1. Match of the Month: Chelsea 2-1 Manchester City

The eyes on the Premier League were on this match. Heading into the match, fans around the globe knew that anything less than three points for Pep Guardiola’s side and Liverpool would clinch its first domestic league trophy in 30 years. While that was the narrative surrounding Man City, the Blues took a different approach.

To Chelsea, this match meant getting a leg up in the Champions League race. Three points for Chelsea meant the Blues closed the gap between themselves and Leicester City even further while keeping pace ahead of Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Frank Lampard put on a tactical masterclass as the Blues saw off the Citizens in style.

Despite Guardiola’s side possessing the ball for an overwhelming majority of the match, Chelsea didn’t break. The Blues put on a rock-solid and uncharacteristic defensive performance. Lampard took a page out of his mentor Jose Mourinho’s book as he set his team up to be lethal on the counterattack. Had it not been for a sublime Kevin De Bruyne free-kick, Lampard’s side would’ve kept a clean sheet against one of the world’s best attacking sides. The defense sustained wave after wave of attack, seldom looking vulnerable. Despite having a minority of the possession, Chelsea outplayed Man City in all facets of the game.

Christian Pulisic scored his second in as many matches and Willian put away a penalty for the winner. The Blues put on a display for the ages and arguably won their most important match of the year to date. Unfortunately for the team, this incredible result was overshadowed by the fanfare surrounding Liverpool’s title win. Regardless, this was arguably Chelsea’s hardest remaining league fixture, so three points was crucial.
