3. More to Chelsea than just the first team

Unlike the Premier League, the FAWSL called it quits earlier in the month, citing it was ‘in the best interest’ of the women’s game. That excuse is farcical and frankly embarrassing, but that’s a discussion for another day. Questions arose once the league’s cancellation was announced about how the title would be decided and subsequently who the champion would be.

The Blues crossed their fingers and pleaded to higher powers it would be them, how could it not be? They had a game in hand on Manchester City, although the Citizens women held a lead atop the table. The league was ultimately decided by points per match and the unbeaten Blues secured their place in women’s top flight history. Although the season came to a disappointing end, an invincible season is always cause for celebration, especially when a trophy comes along with it. The Chelsea women finished the season with two trophies, an unbeaten record in the league and a secured spot in next year’s UEFA Women’s Champions League.

Now—with some time to recover—Sam Kerr, Fran Kirby, Guro Reiten, Beth England and the rest of the women will turn their focus to defending their title. European glory is once again within reach for one of the continent’s most successful clubs.

Due to the Coronavirus break having an impact on nearly every league in the world, it’s difficult to highlight the performance of a single loanee. Therefore, this month’s focus will be on Mario Pasalic.

The club announced the sale of Pasalic to Atalanta for £13.5 million a few weeks ago, marking the end of the Croatian’s six years as a part of the loan army. Pasalic has thrived at Atalanta as the Italian club has gained international attention. Pasalic has been an important player for the Serie A side and hopes to elevate the club into a Champions League spot for next season.

On a larger scale, this sale is significant because it kicks off what could be a fire sale of loan army and first team players to help Chelsea fund some massive moves this summer.
