State of the Blue-nion: Chelsea wins FAWSL title; Havertz rumors continue
5. What’s ahead in July?
July will see the season come to a close, so we’re now in the home stretch. The Blues have many important matches ahead—including a trip to Wembley for an FA Cup semifinal against Manchester United. However, it’s Chelsea’s last league match against Wolves that stands out above the rest.
Chelsea has been locked in a tight top four sprint since November. The race is as close as ever heading into July, with six points separating the four major contenders—Leicester, Chelsea, Man United and Wolves. In all likelihood, the four horse race for two Champions League spots will come down to the last week of the season when another top four contender comes to the Bridge.
The Blues battered Wolves early in the season. Fikayo Tomori’s wonder strike is the most memorable moment of the match, but few remember the west London sides dominance. During the 5-2 rout of the home team, Chelsea registered three times as many shots on target and twice as many shots overall. They controlled a majority of the possession and Tammy Abraham racked up goals, scoring his first Chelsea hat-trick at the Molineux. Few sides truly dominate Wolves at home, so they’ll be anxious for revenge.
With the decision surrounding Man City’s potential Champions League ban coming on July 13, Wolves will be eager to elevate themselves into a top five position. At the moment, Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad is on the outside looking in, even if the fifth spot becomes an automatic for Champions League. They’ve gone on some unbelievable runs this season, who is to say they can’t do it again? Chelsea needs to win its remaining league matches, but replicating the reverse fixture against Wolves would do wonders for the club’s top four ambitions.
A lot could happen between now and then—20 days is an eternity in the post-Coronavirus Premier League—but it’s hard to imagine this match not carrying any weight.
