Chelsea predicted XI at Palace: Lampard goes with strength once again
Billy Gilmour (No. 47) Defensive midfielder, Scotland
Gilmour struggled against Watford, but expect to see him get the nod in midfield for multiple reasons. First, N’Golo Kante picked up an injury in the previous match. Also, Jorginho is nowhere to be seen. Gilmour has put up enough good performances to deserve a start though. He was impressive against Liverpool and Everton before the break. The Scot is extremely gifted, technically and a joy to watch. If Jorginho was going to make an appearance, he’d have done so by now. Expect Gilmour to start while Jorginho watches from the stands again.
Ross Barkley (No. 8) Central midfielder, England
Barkley has had a rough season, but he has responded well as of late. He was crucified for a missed penalty against Valencia in the opening game of the UEFA Champions league group stages and he was never really given any slack. He kept putting up A-level performances for England and now Chelsea is enjoying similar performances from him. The midfielder’s been crucial to Chelsea’s success since the restart, changing multiple games while both starting and coming off the bench.
Barkley has been decisive, moving the ball quickly and slowing it down when necessary. It is better to get Barkley on the pitch while he is still in red-hot form and allowing him to thrive, especially when partnered with Mount.
Mason Mount (No. 19) Central midfielder, England
Mount should make another start against Crystal Palace. He made many forward passes against Watford—his energy when pressing matched that of Watford. He was solid, as Cesc Fabregas wasted no time pointing out on Twitter, and he has been throughout the season. It is easy to see why Chelsea relies so much on Mount. His pressing and work rate is second to none. He earned Man of the Match honors last game, according to some. He’s also appeared in every Chelsea match this season, this will be no different.
