Chelsea key clashes vs. Norwich: Krul vs Blues’ attack
3. Max Aarons vs. the Chelsea left back
I’m going to say it, as exciting as the prospect of signing Kai Havertz is, Chelsea shouldn’t even consider signing the German until the left back position has been sorted. Emerson hasn’t appeared for the Blues since January and Marcos Alonso has played just 45 minutes in the past three games, resulting in club captain Cesar Azpilicueta being deployed in the position. Needless to say, it is highly unlikely any of these players will be the side’s starting left back next season.
Given the way Norwich plays, whoever Frank chooses to start will have the job of keeping tabs on promising right back Max Aarons. This time last year, Aarons was being linked to a host of top sides, but chose to stay loyal to the Canaries. It is unlikely his loyalty will continue much longer, and he will surely find himself a new team next month as he continues to be linked with Tottenham Hotspur.
In the Championship, Aarons was a formidable attacking threat, notching six assists and a pair of goals. He has understandably been less productive in the topflight, providing just two assists. There is a trend of already relegated teams improving their fortunes after their fate is sealed and so, we may see Aarons put in some solid performances to round out the season—even if it is just to remind potential buyers what he is capable of.
Tuesday should realistically be a breeze for Chelsea, despite their fluctuating form. Norwich certainly has some talented players, but it is highly unlikely the Canaries will break their seven game losing streak anytime soon. Who knows, however, with nothing to play for the likes of Cantwell, Aarons and Godfrey are all in the shop window and could yet cause a final upset before the Canaries once again bow out of the Premier League.
