Chelsea key clashes at Anfield: Olivier Giroud vs. Virgil van Dijk
3. Chelsea’s back five vs. Liverpool’s front three
A lot of talk in recent weeks has focused on Manchester United’s front three of Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford—rightfully so. The Red Devils’ trio has been on fire, scoring more goals than the Liverpool front three. Make no mistake, however, the Liverpool attacking arsenal is the best the Premier League has to offer; regardless of what stats say about it.
Chelsea’s defensive struggles have been exposed by numerous teams since the resumption of play. That being said, the Blues looked much more steady against Man United’s tricky forwards playing a 3-4-3—or a variation of a three-at-the-back formation. Lampard should deploy the formation once again, this time at Anfield.
Playing with three centerbacks allows for more defensive stability. There is less room for error given the presence of more defensive-minded bodies. Further, playing in wing-back roles allows for both Marcos Alonso and Reece James to march up the pitch more effectively. Having Cesar Azpilicueta and Kurt Zouma each side of Antonio Rudiger also seemed to limit mistakes at the weekend.
Against Liverpool’s attacking front, Chelsea has to be organized and willing to defend in a compact shape. Lining up with five along the back line gives Lampard’s side the opportunity to absorb more pressure and counter when necessary. The Blues will have to play a lot like they did against Manchester City, making the most of their opportunities. However, a formation change is necessary due to the attacking prowess of Liverpool’s Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
If Chelsea can stop the Liverpool front three—specifically Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane—from finding the back of the net, the Blues give themselves a good shot at winning. If not, it could be a long day at the office.
