Chelsea: Four lessons learnt from Liverpool shellacking
By Travis Tyler
4. All to play for on Championship Sunday
Here is how things look going towards match day 38. A Chelsea win or draw guarantees top four regardless of the result of Manchester United versus Leicester City. A Chelsea loss would require Leicester City to lose as well. A draw in that match and a Chelsea loss would see the Blues miss out on goal difference. Wolves, meanwhile, will need to match or better Tottenham’s result (win, lose, or draw that is) to guarantee themselves Europa League. Anything else and they are relying on Chelsea defeating Arsenal in the FA Cup to make seventh a Europa League spot.
The Blues are very much in control of their own destiny as they host Wolves on Sunday. But then again, so are Leicester City, Manchester United, and Wolves. That means each of the four teams has no reason not to go all out and get the result they want.
Chelsea has had no trouble scoring goals as of late, which is good given how Wolves have one of the League’s best defenses. It is the Blues’ own defense that is such an issue and Wolves are not so bad at that either.
Lampard’s team smashed Wolves in the reverse fixture but that is no guarantee they can do the same now. They will have to if they want to control their own Champions League fate though. Otherwise, they will be stuck hoping Manchester United does them a favor which is a terrible place to be in.
